Poker Cheat Sheet for Beginners

Start with high card, one pair and two pair at the bottom of the chart. Then work upward: three of a kind, straight, flush and full house. Every row beats all the rows below it.

  1. Make your best five-card hand. In Hold’em, combine your hole cards and the board in any way.
  2. Compare the hand type first. A flush beats a straight; three of a kind beats two pair.
  3. For the same type, compare the ranks that make the hand, then the remaining cards (kickers), highest first.

Same pair? Look at the kickers.

With A♠ A♦ K♣ 9♥ 4♣ against A♥ A♣ Q♦ 9♠ 4♦, both players have a pair of aces. The king kicker beats the queen.

Aces can finish either end of a straight.

A–2–3–4–5 is a five-high straight. T–J–Q–K–A is ace-high. A straight runs in one continuous sequence.

Playing Omaha?

Make your hand with exactly two of your four hole cards and exactly three community cards. Select Omaha in the calculator to apply that rule.
